The City's 1992 Community Plan established a Historic Preservation Element. In 1997, the City adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance. The first five member Historic Preservation Commission was appointed by City Council in late 1997, and Sedona achieved designation by the State of Arizona as a Certified Local Government (CLG) in 1998.

The Commission now meets regularly to implement the goals of the Historic Preservation Master Plan and work with residents of historic properties. Priorities include: pro-active monitoring of historic properties; designation of local landmarks; active involvement in City policy actions, i.e., Community Plan update, innovative incentives for re-development of historic properties, and other planning actions; Uptown projects; community awareness and educational activities; and update and establishment of policies and procedures.
