Dan was born in Phoenix, Arizona, the youngest of three children. He attended grade school and high school there. While in high school, he played baseball, football and track. He was awarded my Eagle Scout badge in 1953. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1961 with a B.S. in Business Management.
He was commissioned upon graduation a second lieutenant in the United States Army. During college, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. He entered active duty in January, 1962, and completed the Armored Officers’ Orientation Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Dan completed Airborne and Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He started a tour in Germany with the 2/67 Armor, 4th Armored Division in August, 1962 as a tank platoon leader. He became a tank company commander before completing his active duty in January 1964. He arranged to remain in Europe for 10 additional months, travelling through 27 countries including: the British Isles, Scandinavia, continental Europe, the Middle East and part of the Communist Block.
Upon returning to the United States, he worked for Standard Oil of California. He returned to ASU and completed his Masters in Business Administration Degree in 1968. He then obtained his private pilot’s license and worked for Goodyear Aerospace and Motorola before beginning law school at the University of Arizona. Graduating in 1972 with a Juris Doctor’s degree, he began a two-year clerkship with the United States District Court in Phoenix. After completing his clerkship, he began working for the Maricopa County Attorney. After 27 years, he retired as a homicide, organized crime and felony prosecutor.
He married his wife, Maureen, in 1987. They have two daughters, Ashley, a junior at Northern Arizona University and Stephanie, a senior at Red Rock High School. Dan retired from the U.S. Army Reserve a colonel in 1991 and retired from the Maricopa County Attorney in 2001. He and Maureen then took their RV on a seven month trip around the United States visiting 36 states and four Canadian provinces.
They bought their home in Sedona in 2002 and have resided here for the past eight years. He was president of the Mingus Mountain Republican Club in Cottonwoods for the last two years, stepping down in January 2010 in order to run for Sedona City Council. Dan is a Christian and a member of Wayside Community Chapel.
