City of Sedona's Monthly Round Up for April 2023

Welcome to the City of Sedona’s monthly newsletter! This is to help keep residents informed on City happenings. Read on for a round up of interesting news, events and announcements.

City Council Recap

Here’s a recap of recent City Council meetings and some decisions you might want to know about:

  • On Apr. 11th, 2023, City Council approved the Outdoor Feeding and Protection of Wildlife Ordinance to regulate the feeding of wildlife and protect the welfare of the public and wild animals.
  • On Apr. 11th, 2023, City Council approved a construction contract in an amount not to exceed $849,425.00 for the Improvements to Back O’ Beyond Road Low Water Crossing Project.
  • On Apr. 11th, 2023, City Council approved an award of a construction contract in an amount not to exceed $3,461,567 for the Pedestrian Crossing at Oak Creek. The construction will begin in May 2023 and will be complete in February 2024.
  • On Apr. 11th, 2023, City Council agreed that the League of Arizona Cities and Towns seek further restrictions on OHV use on Arizona roadways as part of their 2024 legislative policy agenda. They also directed the City Attorney to explore the development of a local ordinance to ensure OHVs meet certain safety standards if they are to be driven on roadways.
  • On Apr. 12th, 2023, City Council designated the City as the official Destination Marketing Organization for Sedona’s city limits. This gives the City the authority to partner with the Arizona Office of Tourism in the future. They also agreed they would like to have a tourism program added to the City organization to have a greater role in the future of tourism management and marketing in Sedona. By bringing a tourism program in house, the City plans to create a Tourism Advisory Board, consisting of a balance of perspectives from residents, businesses, and City partners, in order to collectively strategize on tourism marketing and management. City Council also gave the City Manager the direction to work with a consultant to develop a framework and timeline with how to move forward with creating a new program.
  • On Apr. 25th, 2023, City Council voted to reconsider a previous City Council action and approve the new Arabella Spa based on compliance with all ordinance requirements of the Land Development Code. This action reversed the Planning and Zoning Commission’s denial on Nov. 15th, 2022.
  • On Apr. 25th, 2023, City Council heard from City staff on proposed revisions to the Sedona Land Development Code (LDC). The revisions to the LDC pertain to the following topics: permitting of OHV leasing businesses, code enforcement, dark sky compliant lighting, and housing design and development standards.

  • that the Sedona Shuttle is one year old? In the midst of Spring Break 2022, the Sedona Shuttle became the City of Sedona’s first foray into public transportation. Since that time, the Sedona Shuttle has seen well over a quarter million passenger boardings and has grown to provide service to five trailheads from three park and ride locations.

  • City Councilor Melissa Dunn has office hours on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Councilor’s Conference Room in the City Clerk’s Office, located at 102 Road Runner Drive. Come talk to her on any topic of your choice with no appointment needed.
  • The free Red Dirt Concert Series season kicks off in May! The 2023 Spring Series will feature four concerts throughout May that happen Friday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Posse Grounds Pavilion.
  • Construction of a new shared-use pathway along Dry Creek Road has begun. Following feedback received from September’s community meeting and the City Council, City crews will construct a new shared-use path between Two Fence Trail and Thunder Mountain Road, adding to our impressive network of shared-use paths throughout the city.
  • The City hired Bryce Beck as the new Sustainability Manager. Congrats Bryce!
  • The Sedona Parks and Recreation Department welcomes applications for the annual inscriptions at the Sedona Military Service Park to highlight veterans who have honorably served their country. For more information or receive an application, click here.
  • Road resurfacing is underway along various city roads. Cactus Asphalt will be performing a city-wide road resurfacing effort between April 24th and May 19th. Click here for more information about the project, including a full list of subdivisions receiving work.
  • The City hired Joshua Frewin as the new Parks and Recreation Manager. Way to go Joshua!
