City Council Recap

Here’s a recap of recent City Council meetings and some decisions you might want to know about:

• On May 9^th, 2023, City Council heard an update from Sedona Sister Cities’ Board of Directors Chair Chuck Marr on their activities and accomplishments. This included discussion on the creation of a formal Sister City agreement with Canmore in Alberta, Canada. The two cities face similar challenges, such as tourism, economic development, and transportation infrastructure. City Council will continue to work with Canmore on a potential future Sister City relationship.
• On May 10^th, 2023, City Council approved the development of a municipal destination marketing and management program, including a Resolution to establish an 11-member Tourism Advisory Board (TAB). Learn more and apply before July 10^th.
• On May 23^rd, 2023, City Council directed the City Attorney to make refinements to the draft Ordinance which would potentially make it unlawful to drive OHVs on public paved roads in city limits that are in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, or that are not approved by the manufacturer to be operated on paved or public roads. The revised Ordinance will be presented to City Council at a future meeting while they continue to work with the OHV industry to mitigate safety challenges.
• On May 24^th, 2023, City Council heard a presentation on the final Sedona Evacuation and Re-Entry Plan. This plan is the first of its kind in the state and uses real travel time data to predict evacuation scenarios using evacuation zones for better communications in an emergency. Two community meetings are expected in June to introduce the plan and evacuation zones to the community.

• To solicit a range of community perspectives around the topic of tourism in Sedona, we are seeking applicants for a new Tourism Advisory Board (TAB). This board will advise the city council and staff on decisions related to tourism strategic planning, branding and marketing, visitor management programs, regional tourism efforts and any other tourism related matters assigned to it by the city council. Read the press release and apply before July 10.
• ADOT has completed the paving portion of their SR 179 improvement project. From June 5-8, ADOT crews will return to SR 179 after 6 p.m. to complete the second phase which includes, among other things, line striping.
• Hear about City Council's priorities for Fiscal Year 2024 by watching this short and informative video. From traffic to housing, and everything in between, we have a great list of projects to accomplish.
• The Sedona Police Department welcomed Ryan Kwitkin, Deputy Chief to the team, sworn-in on Thursday, May 18^th. Welcome on board Deputy Chief Kwitkin!
• Gather your friends and co-workers for co-ed Adult Softball League this summer! Registration closes on June 3^rd.  
• Registration for a variety of upcoming kids summer camps at Posse Grounds Park are now open, including Lego, soccer, science, art, mountain biking, and yoga camps. 
• Register your kids for Beginner Edge Sports Training (B.E.S.T)! The 8-week summer season clinic offers a variety of different sports options to choose from including soccer, basketball, track and more.
• The Free to be me Drum Circle is back at the Posse Grounds Pavilion on June 17 from 12-2 p.m. This professionally facilitated, all-inclusive crowd participation event is free and open to all ages and abilities.
• Bring your doggies to Yappy Hour, every Thursday between April and October from 8-9 a.m. at Posse Grounds Park lower softball field.
• The Splash Pad at Sunset Park is open from May through September for children and adults to play and cool off!
