City Council Recap

Below are the highlights of May City Council meetings and some decisions that may interest you:

• On May 14, 2024, City Council approved several items on the consent agenda, including:       
• A construction contract for eight new Pickleball Courts in Posse Grounds Park in an amount-not-to-exceed $1,598,975. Construction began on June 3 and will be complete by the fall.
• A resolution to execute an intergovernmental agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation to design a Shared Use Path on Brewer Road in the approximate amount of $129,578.
• On May 14, 2024, City Council approved the construction contract for the Uptown Sedona Parking Garage project in an amount-not-to-exceed $17,545,098 and additional professional services associated with design of the Parking Garage for $154,070. Council directed staff to prepare a revenue bond sale in the amount of $18 Million dollars to finance the project.
• On May 28, 2024, City Council approved the Tentative City Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 at $106,155,786. The final budget adoption is scheduled for June 25, 2024.
• On May 28, 2024, City Council approved the development agreement with the Villas on Shelby, LLC to build 30 units of affordable housing. City Council agreed to allow the developer certain exceptions including building to a height of 40 feet.
• On May 28, 2024, City Council received an in depth presentation about the Short-Term Rental Monitoring Program which included timelines, goals, procedures and details on the newly implemented permitting system.
• On May 29, 2024, the Sustainability Department gave an update on the Climate Action Plan. Highlights included progress on the Green Fleet Policy, Municipal Sustainability Plan, and the Green House Gas Inventory which showed a decrease of greenhouse gas emissions of 8% from 2018 levels.

Did You Know

…that the Historical Ranger Station Park will have new features installed in the next several months, including playground equipment with unique wooden features such as a Large Javelina, a Baby Javelina, a Ranger Jeep, and a Cocowave Swing. An adult fitness station, a concrete ping-pong table, concrete cornhole boards, checkers, chess, backgammon game tables, and a golf turf putting green will also be installed. The park is open and the public is welcome to walk on the shared use pathway and enjoy the shade trees. We look forward to the completion of the playground this fall and the park as a whole in 2025 which will offer restrooms, access to rent the fully restored buildings and much more!

Mark Your Calendar:

• Plan for daytime closures from June 3-7 and lane restrictions from June 10 through August on SR 89A on the Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks. Read more about ADOT’s project.
• Construction for eight new Pickleball Courts at Posse Grounds Park began on June 3 and will be complete this fall!
• Four youth summer sports camps are available for registration including mountain biking, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Specialty camps are also open for registration including yoga, dancing, drawing, coding, botanist, STEAM and drama.
• The Sedona Community Pool is now open on Fridays, and we’ve extended our hours: during the week we’re now open until 5:15 pm for rec swim, and on Saturdays and Sundays we’re open until 7:00 pm!
• Water Aerobics at the Sedona Community Pool began on May 28, occurring 4-days a week from Tuesday through Fridays starting at 10:05 am. There will also be three youth swim lesson sessions this summer.
• StarBabies and StarTots (Adult/Infant-Toddler Class) are back! Drop-in for a 30-minute swim class for adults and their toddler/infant offered on Saturdays at 10:45 am during the summer season. 
• Looking for something fun to do every Thursday this summer? Sign up for co-ed Adult Softball Recreational League!

• The new Rotating Art Program display features paintings created by Ed Buonvecchio and photographs by Terry Shoulders available for public viewing through September 4. Book your appointment!
• The Historic Preservation Commission is seeking one resident volunteer to fill a three-year term seat.
• Bocce Ball League is coming to Posse Grounds Park! This popular game will take place on the two new bocce ball courts in Posse Grounds Park, with league play great for all levels in a fun and easy-to-learn social sport. Register today!
• The Sustainability Department accepted Les Springs to become the first neighborhood to join its new Sustainable Neighborhoods Program.
• Always be prepared! The Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management launched a new, user-friendly website that is designed to provide residents with a quicker and simper way to access information and enhance their ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.
