City Council Recap
Below are the highlights of the March City Council meetings and some decisions that may interest you:
- On March 10, 2026, City Council held the second of two Public Hearings concerning the extension of the Alternative Expenditure Limitation – Home Rule Option with regard to the City Budget. City Council approved placing the Home Rule Option on the July 21 Primary Election ballot.
- On March 10, 2026, City Council heard an overview of certain public rights-of-way within the City that have historically been privately maintained, along with related considerations for when and how the City may assume maintenance responsibility. Council directed staff to come back with an assessment in FY27 that includes safety standards, results of public outreach, costs and funding options. Staff will add Goodrow Lane to the Capital Improvements Projects List for Council consideration during the upcoming budget meetings on April 22-23, 2026.
- On March 24, 2026, City Council approved a construction contract for the Wastewater Reclamation Plant (WWRP) secondary clarifier rehabilitation project in an amount-not-to-exceed $748,744. Secondary clarifiers are instrumental in the treatment process and are responsible for separating solids from water.
- On March 24, 2026, City Council approved entering a 20-year Rights-Of-Way (ROW) License Agreement with Wecom LLC authorizing installation of a high-speed fiber optic network in Sedona. Bringing state-of-the-art fiber broadband to Sedona’s homes and businesses has been a long-time priority of the City Council’s. The City worked with Wecom to credit the City’s 3% ROW license fee on Wecom’s gross revenues within the City – a credit not to exceed $3,249,600 – in exchange for Wecom installing a City-owned fiber network connecting major City-owned facilities. In addition, Wecom plans to make available high-speed fiber broadband to all homes and businesses in Sedona. The City is excited to see Wecom extend its fiber broadband network to Sedona residents and businesses for competitive, fiber-optic high-speed internet. Wecom expects this project will be complete in less than 2 years.
- On March 24, 2026, City Council approved staff to pursue the FY27 Congressionally Directed Spending funding through the offices of Senator Mark Kelly and Senator Ruben Gallego for the Brewer/Ranger Road Roundabout construction project (total cost of $5,412,064). The funding request will be for the maximum amount of $3,000,000.
- On March 25, 2026, City Council conducted a joint meeting with the Sedona Oak-Creek Unified School District (SOCSD) to discuss housing needs and the needs of families in Sedona. In addition to staff presenting the initial data results for the Balanced Housing Strategy, the school district presented information regarding enrollment, projections, staff demographics, how school funding works, and the 15% levy override that occurs every five years. Two Councilors have been selected to meet with representatives of the school boards of SOCSD and the Sedona Charter School in April to consider future financial support of these schools.
