Highlights: The fire made a 3,200 acre run to the north prompting the change in evacuation status of Kachina Village and Forest Highlands. While firefighters continue to battle the Pocket Fire during this Red Flag weather, significant additional resources are arriving to assist in the effort.

 

Public Meeting: A public meeting will be held in Sedona at 7 p.m., Monday, June 29 at Sedona Red Rock Middle School and High School, 995 Upper Red Rock Loop Rd, Sedona. Incident Management Team members and local authorities will speak and be available for questions from attendees. The meeting will be live streamed on the Coconino National Forest Facebook page: U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest.

 

Operations: On Saturday, fire backed into Bear Sign Canyon and once aligned with the wind, quickly moved up the drainages to its sides. Multiple spot fires were observed north of Woody Mountain Road (Forest Road 231) and prepositioned resources responded quickly. Despite their efforts, the spot fires consolidated and the fire made a 3,200-acre run to the north. This prompted the new evacuation orders of Kachina Village and Forest Highlands. Initial attack (IA) groups were quick to respond to new starts in the area. Structure groups started work to build defensible space around the affected communities and that work will continue today. Fifteen engines and other new resources are responding to the fire to bolster the team protecting critical resources in the area. Today, crews will continue to prep contingency lines and survey for additional defensive manmade and natural features while IA groups remain poised to detect and suppress new starts in the area.

 

Evacuations and Closures: Evacuations have changed. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has added Kachina Village and Forest Highlands to the SET evacuation status. Weather: Today may be the last day of the three-day Red Flag Warning and weather is forecast to be as severe as Saturday’s. Daytime highs will be in the 70s or 80s, depending on elevation. Southwest winds will reach 35 mph sustained with gusts to 50 mph. After a night of poor humidity recovery, humidity will remain in the single digits. No measurable precipitation is expected.

 

Safety: Some locations in the area have experienced air quality from “Unhealthy” to “Good.” This can change from hour to hour, so the public should remain vigilant. Authorized motorists should drive cautiously around switchbacks and blind curves as fire traffic and large vehicles will have an increased presence on the road. Slow speeds are advised to ensure motorist and firefighter safety.
