Highlights: California Interagency Incident Management Team 6 has assumed command of the Pocket Fire. There will be no break in operations.

Operations: Saturday, on the northwest part of the fire, crews continued to monitor and patrol the established control lines. In West Fork Canyon, water dropping helicopters and ground resources kept the fire within its current footprint. In the Barney Spring area, crews extended handlines and built containment lines in areas that dozers were unable to access. Along the south edge of the fire, crews continued to go direct when available, prepare contingency lines and utilize aircraft to keep the fire growth in check. Crews continue to closely monitor Maroon Mountain to ensure the fire that was moving downslope did not become established below the face of the mountain. Retardant drops continue in Secret Canyon and on Secret Mountain to allow ground crews the opportunity to build containment lines and reinforce existing trails across the mountaintop.

 

Today, helicopters and ground resources will continue their efforts to slow progression of the fire down West Fork Canyon as well as, increasing handline construction in the Barney Spring area. Both actions are meant to keep fire from reaching Oak Creek Canyon. Across the south end of the fire, efforts towards stopping the fire backing down Bear Sign Canyon and flanking across Secret Mountain will continue. As a contingency, crews will extend and strengthen firelines along the powerlines to the southwest. Crews are also looking at roads and natural features to develop other contingency lines in that area. Monitoring of previously secured lines will continue in all areas. Structure group will continue working to build defensible spaces and reinforce protections in Seven Canyons and Enchantment. Initial Attack resources will remain ready to suppress any new fire starts in the area and will continue assisting Arizona Department of Transportation in removing hazard trees along the State Route 89A corridor. Work continues to repair roads along the northern perimeter of the fire. Aircraft resources continue to support the firefighting efforts in all areas of the fire.

Weather: The forecast for today calls for highs in the 80s at higher elevations and upper 90s near Sedona. Skies will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon. Thunderstorms could bring lightning and strong, unpredictable outflow winds. Humidity will remain low. Temperatures will continue to climb for the next few days.
