Highlights: Containment increases to 48% on the Pocket Fire.

 

Operations: Sunday, in the northwest part of the fire, crews continued to strengthen and monitor control lines. In West Fork Canyon, helicopters provided water drops to allow ground resources the ability to continue their work to keep the fire within its current footprint. Along the south edge of the fire, crews went direct constructing handline along the fire’s edge where it was safe to do so. Crews continue to closely monitor Maroon Mountain to ensure the fire did not become established below the face of the mountain. Retardant drops continue in Secret Canyon and on Secret Mountain to allow ground crews the opportunity to build containment lines and go construct handline along the fire’s edge.

 

Today, helicopters and ground resources will continue their efforts to slow progression of the fire down West Fork Canyon. Along the south end of the fire, retardant drops and ground crews are going direct along the fire’s edge to stop the fire from backing down Bear Sign Canyon and flanking across Secret Mountain. As a contingency, crews continue to extend and strengthen firelines along the powerlines to the southwest. Crews are also looking at roads and natural features to develop other contingency lines in that area. Monitoring of previously secured lines will continue in all areas. Firefighting resources will continue working to build defensible spaces and reinforce the communities in Seven Canyons and Enchantment. Initial Attack resources remain ready to respond to any new fire starts in the area and will continue assisting Arizona Department of Transportation in removing hazard trees along the State Route 89A corridor. Work continues to repair roads along the northern perimeter of the fire. Aircraft resources continue to support the firefighting efforts in all areas of the fire.

Weather: The forecast for today calls for hotter and dryer weather with temperatures over the fire area ranging from the 100’s in the lower elevations and 80’s in the higher elevations. Southwest winds are expected 5-10 mph gusting 15 to 20 mph. Relative humidity down to 10 % in the lower elevations and 15-18% in the higher elevations.
