State Route 89A is reopened. The U.S. Forest Service also revised their trail closure area to be less restrictive. Now open trails include Jordan, Javalina, Adobe Jack, Sugarloaf Loop, Thunder Mountain, Andante, Chimney Rock Pass, Fay Canyon and Bear Mountain. Trails that remain closed are Long Canyon, Boynton Canyon, Mescal, Canyon of Fools, Devil’s Bridge, Brins Mesa, Secret Canyon, Soldier Pass and Jim Thompson. Now open day-use and creek sites in Oak Creek Canyon include Bootlegger, Halfway, Encinoso and Slide Rock and still closed sites include West Fork/Call of the Canyon and any associated roadside parking areas and Midgley. Highlights: Containment holding at 76% on the Pocket Fire.
Operations: Today, firefighting personnel continue to patrol and reinforce containment lines, with all containment lines holding. Crews are chipping where needed, as well as being available for initial attack. Firefighters are prepping and chipping fuels to greatly reduce fire intensity should it reach those areas. As conditions improve, more resources shift to suppression repair and equipment cleanup. Resource advisors work with excavator crews to repair the suppression efforts.
In the West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon, the fire continues to hold within existing retardant lines, but hot spots remain. Little to no rain fell in the areas with the most heat. Aerial resources patrol and monitor the area. Crews and aerial resources finished removing excess equipment from this part of the fire.
Aerial patrols identified no remaining hot spots in Long Canyon. Elsewhere in the south of the fire, crews finished suppression repair and equipment removal.
Weather: Today will bring a localized chance of showers, thunderstorms and wind gusts to 30 MPH after 11 AM, with a low risk of flash flooding. The temperature is trending cooler, with a high today in the mid 80s. In the morning, wind is expected from the south between 5 and 10 MPH, with gusts to 15 MPH.
Evacuations and Closures: All areas returned to READY status. As of 7 AM, State Route 89A is open in both directions. Woody Mountain Road remains closed to the south of its intersection with Forest Road 536. Coconino National Forest has implemented Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. A portion of the forest remains closed.
