City Council Recap
Below are the highlights of the June City Council meetings and some decisions that may interest you:
- On June 9, 2026, City Council heard an update on the Sedona Police Department (SPD) Strategic Plan for 2026-2029. The goal of the plan is to provide a clear vision and work plan for the City to adopt and implement over the next three to five years to ensure an ongoing commitment to professional, community-oriented policing in Sedona. The SPD leadership team will give quarterly progress updates to Council.
- On June 10, 2026, City Council reviewed a variety of sustainability code recommendations and programs that can be pursued to help align and advance goals in the City’s master plans. Feedback from this session will aid refinement and possible direction for incorporation of sustainability code recommendations into future building and land development code updates. The recommendations serve as a reference point on implementable options to enhance the City’s efforts in energy, mobility, water, waste and climate resilience.
- On June 23, 2026, City Council adopted the final Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27 in the amount of $97,963,222, which is 5% less than last year’s budget. This new Budget went into effect on July 1, 2026.
- On June 23, 2026, City Council heard an update about the Pocket Fire by District Ranger Alex Schlueter, which began on June 20 and as of July 21 is now 95% contained. The Coconino National Forest/Red Rock Ranger District then provided an update about their programs and priorities, including staffing and federal reorganization of the United States’ Forest Service (FSFS); Wildfire Readiness and Response, Active Forest Management, Minerals & Energy Development, Recreation Access & Infrastructure and Partnerships & Cooperative Federalism.
- On June 23, 2026, City Council discussed the Fire Safe Sedona Program, designed to promote wildfire preparedness, educate residents, and assist the community in becoming more resilient to wildfire threats. Its primary goal is to provide educational opportunities in collaboration with partners, raising awareness of potential risks and informing residents about resources to reduce wildfire hazards in neighborhoods and individual properties. Staff are currently contacting local organizations to form new partnership opportunities, encouraging presentation opportunities at homeowner associations meetings, and coordinating collaboration at future Sedona community events. These actions support the goals and objectives of the program.
- On June 24, 2026, City Council were updated on their roles and responsibilities in supporting incident management under the National Incident Management System. Council was given an overview of the Incident Command System, emergency management principles, and the role of policy-level leadership during emergencies and disasters. Next steps will be for City Council to participate in a table-top exercise which will give them first-hand experience within their role in emergencies.

Sandbags are an important step in being ready for monsoon season rains and possible flooding.
