Learn how the City works

Transparency in action begins at the Citizens Academy, a program offered to give a holistic understanding of how your local government functions, tackling community topics like workforce housing, transit, traffic, and more. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Council and various department staff to better understand City operations and issues. This free program is open to City residents who are 14 years and older. Participants younger than 18 need a signed waiver by a parent/guardian.

Citizens who complete the Academy are encouraged to participate in the Citizen Engagement Program and/or apply for vacancies on City boards, commissions, and committees. The hope is to identify new leaders in the community and enhance citizen participation in City planning and processes.

Registration will open in mid-August for the 2026 Citizens Academy.

Schedule and class size

The Academy is a free, nine-session program that occurs every autumn. Presentations are provided by City Council and each city department. An optional tour of the Sedona Wastewater Treatment Plant is also included. Class size is limited to 22 residents.
