map rendering of SIM 5D and SIM 5E proposed roundabouts at Ranger/89A/Forest Road and Ranger/Brewer ROad

The proposed roundabouts at the intersection of Ranger Road, 89A and the Forest Road extension, and the intersection of Ranger Road and Brewer Road, are separate projects but rely on the completion of each other to be successful. Without one, the other will not function at maximum efficiency. If constructed simultaneously, the City may realize cost savings due to economy of scale, and City staff is currently seeking grant funding for both projects.

For a detailed explanation of how these two roundabouts work together with other improvements like the Uptown parking garage, please watch the SIM Explainer Video below.

Ranger Road, 89A and Forest Road roundabout

Sedona In Motion project name: SIM 5E

This project involves the design and construction of a new roundabout at the new intersection of Ranger Road, 89A and Forest Road. The roundabout is the culmination of phased improvements that include a roundabout at the intersection of Ranger Road and Brewer Road, and the extension of Ranger Road from Brewer Road to 89A. Work will include modifications to the existing roundabout at the intersection of Brewer Road and 89A to better manage the flow of traffic at that intersection.

The project will also include a Shared Use Path (SUP) running the full length of the Ranger Road extension, linking 89A to Brewer Road with improved pedestrian and bicycle access.

Current status

Design is complete, and final permitting from ADEQ/FEMA is pending. City staff responded to the required Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMR) from the Coconino County FEMA Floodplain Administrator, and final approval is pending.

Background

The proposed improvements are identified in the Transit Master Plan and are necessary to provide an alternate route around the "Y" intersection (SR89A/SR179). The alternate route is provided by the completion of both the Forest Road extension from Uptown Sedona, leading to the connection with 89A and the proposed roundabout. A traffic planning study demonstrates that the proposed roundabout will facilitate the flow of traffic in the area, improving efficiency in the roundabouts at Brewer Road, the "Y" intersection and the proposed roundabout at Brewer/Ranger, to reduce congestion while increasing overall connectivity and mobility.

Ranger Road and Brewer Road roundabout

Sedona In Motion project name: SIM 5D

This project involves the design and construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Ranger Road and Brewer Road, and the extension of Ranger Road from the intersection with Brewer to the intersection of 89A and Forest Road.

The project will include a Shared Use Path (SUP) running north/south along Brewer Road from the proposed roundabout to the existing roundabout at Brewer Road and 89A. This SUP will provide improved pedestrian and bicycle access. City staff is working closely with local businesses near the intersection to maintain existing parking availability.

Current status

The design is complete. Staff identified adjacent parcels that, if owned by the City, would offset construction costs. Acquisition of those lands will be completed soon. The FEMA Floodplain Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMR) is submitted to both the Yavapai and Coconino Counties Floodplain administrators, and their comments have been received. Bid packages are to be prepared and advertised.

Background

The project began with a traffic study that determined a roundabout at the intersection of Ranger Road and Brewer Road would be the most efficient configuration to keep traffic moving. The project meets all the SIM goals for congestion mitigation, connectivity, and mobility.

Past improvements to SR 179 have routed additional traffic onto Ranger and Brewer Roads, making the current intersection and adjacent roadways inadequate for present traffic volumes. Future traffic increases will create safety issues, render the intersection ineffective, and create added congestion at adjacent intersections. The proposed improvements will increase the efficiency of the intersection and accommodate potential transit improvements in the area via the proposed Ranger Road extension.
