Commission Purpose

The Planning and Zoning Commission, a voluntary body established by City Council, consists of seven citizens appointed to play a critical role in the city’s planning process. The commission serves as the city council’s advisor on land use, growth and development issues. Commission duties include making recommendations to the city council on Community Plan updates, Land Development Code amendments, and property zone changes. In addition, the commission makes the final decision on conditional use permits hears appeals of Director (administrative) decisions on development reviews and subdivisions.

Meeting information

Planning and Zoning Commission meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 102 Roadrunner Drive. Meetings are cancelled if there are no items on the agenda; check the agenda and meeting materials link above approximately one week in advance of a scheduled meeting to see if the meeting will be held or to review the agenda and packet materials.

Apply for the Planning and Zoning Commission

Planning and Zoning Commissioners serve rotating 3-year terms. Commissioners are not automatically reappointed and must reapply if they would like to continue serving. Terms start in November and end in October and there are 2-3 seats available each year. Application periods are typically open in August/September and may be open at other times if an unexpected vacancy occurs.
