The City of Sedona is a certified Starfish Swimming Provider and now offers the Starfish Swim School program. This program is a fun, safe and effective swim program for all ages and introduces the lifelong skills of swimming and water safety. The Starfish Swimming curriculum consists of courses containing age-appropriate activities that focus on development of core aquatic skill competencies. The curriculum is built around the concept that there are core aquatic skills (competencies) that every person needs to know to be proficient in the water. The core competencies provide the foundation that will enable students to first learn functional self-survival skills, then learn correct swimming stroke technique by building upon what they already know. An assessment of each child’s skill level will be performed in order to determine class placement.
Learning stages - The five core competencies remain the same regardless of the age of the student, and represent the stage of skill development. For example, a student of any age must first develop the competency of trust before being able to learn other skills. The stage of skill development is identified by a color, listed lowest to highest below:
StarBabies and StarTots (Ages 6 months - 2 years) This class introduces infants and toddlers to the water in a fun and loving environment. Parents/caregivers are taught the proper techniques to teach their infants and toddlers how to float, submerge, move in the water and rollover. Classes incorporate songs and activities to meet the swim skill benchmarks. Safety skill benchmarks are designed to educate the parents or caregivers while instilling water safety habits.
Starfish Swim School® for Preschoolers (Ages 3 – 5) Designed to meet the needs of children ages 3 to 5, this course will develop a high comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim, and for those children who are developmentally ready, it will teach functional swim skills. This class approaches teaching swimming through creative, fun activities in the water. Students work toward developing the five competencies and progress toward achieving the benchmarks at their own pace in a small-group setting.
Starfish Swim School® for Youth (Ages 6 – 12) Students work toward development of the five core swimming competencies using age-appropriate learning activities. Learning is self-paced but challenging.
Starfish Swim School® for Teens and Adults (Ages 13 and older) This course is designed to improve comfort and skill in the water, regardless of past swimming experience. Students work toward developing the five basic core swimming competencies using principles of adult learning.
Starfish Stroke School™ This course is for students of all ages who have achieved the green Swim School benchmarks. Students refine freestyle and learn stroke technique for backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and develop endurance.
To foster the student/instructor relationship and eliminate distractions, parents are not allowed on the pool deck or in the immediate vicinity during swim lessons. A designated viewing area will be made available.
Guide for Class Placement:
Private 30 minutes lessons are available for all ages. The cost for each lesson is $15 per person. Appointments may be scheduled at the Sedona Community Pool.
